Q. When should I register my child for the 2010/2011 school year?
A. Registration is now open for the 2010/2011 school year. If you have any questions, please contact the Sunnybeam Co-Registrar, Suzanne Riley, at 206-232-3686 or suzanne-riley@comcast.net.
Q. What is the process for accepting children to Sunnybeam?
A. Sunnybeam preschool has a non-discrimination policy. Registration applications are now available with a requested due date of February 26, 2010. If we receive more applications than there are spaces in the program, a lottery will take place. Alumnae Sunnybeam families do have a preference.
Q. What are the registration eligibility requirements?
1. Children must be three years old before September 1, 2010 to be eligible for the Caterpillar Programs (3’s program), and four years old before September 1, 2010 to be eligible for the Butterfly Program (4’s program).
2. Health History and Enrollment Forms: In accordance with Washington State law, all children attending Sunnybeam must have received the Hepatitis B vaccination. Sunnybeam follows the Mercer Island School District policy that requires parents to sign a claim of personal exemption if your child's immunizations are incomplete. Sunnybeam also requires that all health, release and enrollment forms be completed and returned to the school by the Friday before the first week of school.
Q. Is registration limited to Mercer Island residents?
A. No. During the registration lottery, Caterpillar class positions are first filled by applicants whose parents or siblings attended Sunnybeam. Next, the pool expands to all Mercer Island residents, and then finally, to all other applicants. For the Butterfly class, the selection priority is similar except that first priority is given to current Caterpillar students who apply to the Butterfly class.
Q. When will I find out if my child is accepted to Sunnybeam?
A. February 26, 2010 between 6-8pm.
Q. Can I volunteer in the class?
A. YES! We encourage volunteers. There is a volunteer sign-up sheet at the school.
Q. What is the student/teacher ratio?
A. There are 4 Sunnybeam teachers and 24 kids in the Butterfly program and 22 kids in the Caterpillar program.
Q. What are the school hours?
A. Regular school hours are the following:
Butterflies: 9:15 – 1:15 Monday & Wednesday; 9:15 – 12:15 Friday Caterpillars: 9:15 – 12:45 Tuesday & Thursday *
*The school day ends at 11:45 for the Caterpillar class only for the month of September.
Q. Do the kids go on field trips?
A. Yes. Parent chaperones are encouraged.
Q. What is the snack policy?
A. All families will be assessed $30/year to fund snacks that will be set up by the teachers. Healthy snacks to include fruits, cheese, crackers, vegetables, yogurt, and water will be provided. Teachers will attempt to comply with food borne allergies but Sunnybeam does not guarantee the safety of the snacks. Sunnybeam asks that parents of children with food allergies check each day to verify that the snack is safe to serve to their child. An instruction sheet will be posted in the kitchen to ensure adequate communication for parents who must check their child’s snack. Parents of children with allergies may opt to provide their child’s own snack (and will not be assessed the $30 fee).
Q. What is the peanut allergy philosophy?
A. Sunnybeam only serves nut-free snacks. Each parent is responsible for providing lunch for their child.
Q. Does my child need to be potty trained?
A. Our expectation is that all children are potty trained or in the process of being potty trained.
Q. Is science only taught in the Science Room?
A. Just as the exploration of literature, art, mathematics, etc. enriches the Science Room activities, so too does the study of science abound in the "Big Room." The science room serves to offer a smaller group setting for all the children to experience on a regular basis, while engaging them in the concept that Science is all around us.
